Camping with Your Dog – A Guide for a Successful Adventure!

Essential packing for your dog's camping comfort

Bring an extra leash and a longer rope, food and water bowls, dog food, treats and chews, a comfortable sleeping place, and perhaps some toys. A reflective vest or a small light to attach to the collar can also be useful for visibility during evening hours. If water is part of your adventure, bring a flotation vest for your dog.

Dogs enjoy camping in tents with their owners. For a successful dog camping trip, pack the right equipment, including food, leash and first aid kit.

First aid kit for camping with dogs

Pack a basic first aid kit for both humans and dogs. Include items such as dog protective boots, paw bandages, tick removal tweezers, nail clippers, and any necessary medications for your dog. For more detailed content on what a first aid kit should contain, see our article on First aid for dogs: What every dog owner needs to know.

Keep clean with wet wipes and towel for the dog

If your dog gets wet or dirty, a towel and wet wipes can be good for keeping the tent clean and dry. A brush can also be helpful if you have a long-haired dog that may bring nature into the tent.

Important things to consider when dog camping

Check rules for pets on campsites

Not all campsites allow pets, so check in advance if you're planning to camp at a designated site. Do the same for mountain lodges and cabins. For more information on preparing a long-distance trip with your dog, see Checklist: long-distance travel with dogs.

Give your dog time to explore the environment

Upon arrival at your destination, let your dog familiarize with the surroundings under your supervision. Take a walk and scout the area before setting up camp. This can help your dog feel more comfortable and at home.

Managing dog territorial behavior when camping

If you have a dog that guards, the campsite can become her/his territory from her/his perspective. Make it a habit to praise and reward your dog when she/he alerts you to someone's presence. Then shorten the leash or guide your dog into the tent, showing her/him that you'll take care of the rest of the watch.

Respect nature with your dog on a leash

Respect Nature: Keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and show consideration to others. Also, remember to clean up after your dog when she/he poops.

Practical advice for successful camping with dogs

Freeze-dried food - easy and practical for dog camping

Freeze-dried food is lightweight and can be excellent camping food for your dog. Introduce your dog to a new diet before embarking on your adventure.

Practice camping at home for safe dogs

If your dog has never been camping before, try a couple of nights in your backyard or a local camping area to see how she/he reacts to the nomadic life and a night in a tent.

Enjoy the moment and have fun! Camping is a fantastic way for you and your dog to strengthen your bond and create memories together. By following these tips, you and your dog can enjoy a fun and safe camping trip. Have a wonderful adventure!
