Swimming with Your Dog: How to Teach Your Dog to Swim

There are few things that surpass the joy and sense of freedom that comes when we dive into the blue and swim – provided that we love water. Sharing that experience with a four-legged friend makes it even more special. Swimming with your dog can be a fantastic activity, but it’s important to consider your dog’s needs and safety to ensure a positive experience. Here are eight tips to enjoy your swim with your beloved pooch!

A great summer activity where a dog and human swim side by side, enjoying a safe and fun time in the water with life jackets and training together.

Respecting your dog's needs when swimming

Pay attention to your dog’s wishes and needs. If your dog seems to be a “water hater” and doesn’t want to swim, respect that. Dogs are like us; some jump right in while others prefer to sit on the shore and watch. If your dog is the latter type, splashing at the water's edge may be enough to delight them. Avoid any form of coercion and let your dog decide whether they want to swim or not. Swimming is not for everyone.

Start with a water break to get the dog used to it

Before venturing into deeper water, start with wading at the water's edge. This gives your dog time to acclimate to the water and warms up their muscles for swimming. Walk back and forth along the shoreline a few times before allowing swimming strokes to take you into the deep. Why not combine swimming with other adventures in the water.

Lifejackets for safety in the water

If you’re swimming for a long time, far out, or in strong currents, both you and your dog should wear life jackets. This provides extra safety and security in case something unexpected happens. It also helps an untrained dog that might not have the stamina to swim far; they can rest with the help of the life jacket. Eliminating the fear of losing control of the situation gives you a braver dog that will want to swim more.

Swim side by side for safety

If your dog becomes anxious or eager and tries to “save you” by swimming on you or clawing, it can hurt and create negative experiences for both you and your dog. Instead, swim side by side toward an object, such as a floating toy or treat (freeze-dried treats float), to keep direction and swim toward a specific point. Combine this with water games to give your dog extra motivation.

Use signals to guide the swim

Teach your dog a cue for swimming. Hold onto the life jacket harness for support, toss an object/treat to mark the direction, and say “swim.” Then swim calmly and steadily with your dog in the designated direction, and praise your furry friend softly when they swim alongside you.

Train your dog to swim towards you

To avoid your dog swimming straight into your arms and trying to climb on you, practice swimming toward you from the shore. Ask your dog to stay on the beach or have someone hold them while you walk out a bit. Use the cue “swim to me” and guide/lure your dog to swim toward you. Consistently reward on your right side to give your pup a final destination that isn’t in your arms.

Increase swimming training step by step

Building the stamina to swim long distances requires training. Start with short swims and gradually increase the distance as your dog’s fitness and physical condition improve for swimming. Take your time to build strength and trust in each other in the water. Once the swim is in, let's inspire other dog adventures that will help keep your dog active and healthy.

Enjoy a great water activity together

Swimming with your dog can be a wonderfully fun and healthy activity for both of you. By focusing on your dog’s needs, being mindful of safety, and using clear cues, you can create a positive and trusting relationship in the water. Venture out on adventures together and enjoy the joyful moments in the water!
