Checklist: Long Trips with Your Dog
Time for a dog-friendly adventure?! Here's a checklist of what to consider and bring along for your trips and escapades. Abroad as well as within your country.
What you need for your trip abroad
- Bring a passport for your dog (if you're traveling abroad).
- Muzzle (if you're visiting a country where certain breeds are prohibited without a muzzle)
- Familiarize yourself with the regulations for entry and exit if traveling internationally.
- Copies of your dog's identification documents.
- Copy of vaccination and health certificates.
- Review your insurance to make sure it covers your dog while on the journey.
- Ensure your dog has proper vaccination coverage.
- Have the vet double-check that your dog's microchip is readable.
Practical things to take on a long trip
ID tag on the collar or harness.
GPS tracker attached to the collar or harness linked to your phone.
Travel crate or car safety harness.
Motion sickness tablets.
Water bottle.
Food (dry or freeze-dried for convenience).
Chew toys and treats.
Soft blanket.
Favorite toy.
Extra leash and collar.
Waste bags.
Paper towels and waste disposal bags.
Sunscreen if you have a thin-haired or hairless dog.
