Supplements for Older Dogs

When our dogs reach old age, it can be wise to give their health a helping hand. One way to do this is through dietary supplements. They can have beneficial effects, although it should be noted that they are not evidence-based. Here are some supplements that can help seniors feel good in body and mind.

Various types of powdered food supplements, such as green-lipped mussel and turmeric, to promote joint health and well-being in older dogs.

Green-lipped mussel:

Green-lipped mussel can be given preventively to promote joint health, strengthen cartilage, and maintain normal function. You can read more about related joint problems in Patella luxation - knee joint problems in dogs.

Glucosamine:

Like green-lipped mussel, glucosamine promotes joint health. It is needed for the production of synovial fluid and the regeneration of damaged cartilage. It can be important, especially if your dog suffers from back pain, as described in Back Pain in Dogs: Symptoms and Treatment.

Magnesium:

Magnesium contributes to the proper functioning of the nervous system. It also promotes normal heartbeat and stable temperament.

Tryptophan:

Tryptophan is an amino acid needed for the body to produce both serotonin (affects mood and well-being) and melatonin (the body's sleep aid).

Turmeric:

Turmeric is anti-inflammatory. It also supports the immune system and digestion, and can alleviate joint discomfort.

Omega:

Omega-3 supports cell structure. If the supplement contains EPA and DHA, it also has anti-inflammatory properties.
